Hurlin’s Quilts That Unite Us featured at potluck Sunday

Apr 03, 2018

MT. PLEASANT — Stacey Kitakis Hurlin of Fairfield will be a presenting guest at the IowaWINS international potluck at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Iowa Wesleyan University social hall.

The event is an opportunity for community members, as well as Iowa Wesleyan students, from a variety of cultures from the many nations represented in the Mt. Pleasant area to share dishes representing diverse cultures and to participate in Quilts That Unite Us.

Hurlin envisioned Quilts That Unite Us during her travels to work with refugees in Greece. The project involved painting squares of fabric that include the creator’s name, age and place of birth. The painted squares are later made into a series of quilts. Hurlin has accumulated 721 squares representing 69 countries.

Hurlin will show a three-minute video, display a finished quilt and many individual squares, then provide the opportunity for attendees to create their own squares.

Attendees are asked to being a dish to share. Place settings are provided.

This is the second year for the dinner. More than 130 people participated in last year’s event.
