Jun 07, 2013

OTTUMWA — Indian Hills Community College will once again be offering the popular G.E.M.S. — Girls Exploring Math and Science — camp this summer.

Girls entering fourth through sixth grades in the fall are eligible to sign up for the free two-day camp that will be held June 20-21 at the Advanced Technology Center on Indian Hills’ Ottumwa campus.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and lunch will be provided.

Although there is no charge, there is a limited number of slots. In order to reserve a spot for a child, call 641-683-5249.

This year’s camp will feature a variety of fun activities showcasing math and science applications. For example, students will design, build, decorate and race a model car. The girls will learn about the scientific concepts of gravity and friction during the exercise.

Girls also will spend time with female mentors involved in math and science careers. The mentors will include faculty at Indian Hills as well as engineers from Cargill in Eddyville.
