Jefferson County Fair

Jun 21, 2017

Joyce Stanley brought in this newspaper clipping of a photo showing a busy day at the Jefferson County Fair in the early 1900s. According to the clipping, these fairgrounds were located north of the Iowa Malleable Iron Co. between Ninth and 12th streets, and the scene here is looking north with 12 Street at left. County fairs were held at the location through 1923, which is about the time the Jefferson County 4-H program got underway. The Jr. Agricultural Show was held at different locations around town: Chautauqua Park, CB&Q Railroad New Chicago Stockyards, Eclipse Lumber Yard and Fairfield High School. The Jr. Ag. Board purchased the current fairgrounds in 1948.
