Jefferson County Master Gardeners; Fairfield Women's Club Garden Club

The Jefferson County Master Gardeners meeting was July 22 at the Jefferson County ISU Extension Office.

President Sandi Dimmitt called the meeting to order at 5:15 p.m., with nine members present. The secretary’s report was not available. The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Gerri Lyon.

Old business involved continued watering of the Maasdam Barns grounds. The signup sheet is complete. A work day at the barns was scheduled for Wednesday evening.

Fundraising has been successful with a plant sale at the Fairfield Farmers’ Market. The “Iowa Wildflower Book” is available from the extension office. The Greater Jefferson County Foundation grant for installing a watering system at Maasdam Barns has been awarded. Installation will begin in the near future.

New business on the agenda included volunteer opportunities at the Discovery Garden and the Iowa Arboretum Booth during the Iowa State Fair Aug. 8-18. Signup sheets with open times and contacts were shared.

Field trip suggestions were presented. Iowa Arboretum is offering an overnight trip to Galena and Rockford, Ill., with garden and mansion tours. A day trip is being planned to Winterset to visit Applehurst & Howell’s in Cumming.

Fundraising is planned for September at the Fairfield Farmers’ Market. Sunflowers in decorative pots and garden labels will be available.

Free Summer Master Gardener Webinars, open to the public, are being presented from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the extension office. The webinars continue with: “Diagnosing Drought Damage, Flood Damage & Other Abiotic Stress Injury on Landscape Trees & Shrubs” Aug. 13; and “Efficient Home Landscape Irrigation” Sept. 3.

A new Master Gardener class is scheduled to begin in September, with Kim Keller and Iowa State University professors as instructors at the Jefferson County ISU Extension Office.

A sympathy card and memorial were given to Sandi Dimmitt on the loss of her loved one.

The next meeting will be at 5:50 p.m. Aug. 26 at the extension office.




Fairfield Women’s Club’s Garden Club will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday at the McElhinny House.

Members will carpool and tour three local flower gardens, have lunch and a business meeting.
