Jefferson County Retired School Personnel

Mar 10, 2014

The Jefferson County Unit of the Iowa Retired School Personnel met Feb. 26 at SunnyBrook Living Care Center.

Seth Miller from Cedar Valley Winery was the guest speaker. He provided surprising facts about the Iowa wine industry. Most people think of it as one of the state’s new industries. However, at the turn of the 20th century, Iowa was sixth in the nation in grape production, but a combination of factors, such as Prohibition, the use of broadleaf herbicides and a disastrous blizzard ruined the industry. Today it is on the rise again, providing opportunities for small farmers. During the presentation, members sampled Cedar Valley’s prize-winning Red Tie Affair sweet wine.

After the presentation, there was a meeting during which members shared ideas for volunteer work that others may be interested in doing.
