Juveniles charged for Keota school fire, roof damage

Mar 09, 2017

KEOTA (GTNS) – City council members learned that charges have been filed against five juveniles for causing a fire that destroyed the roof of the community’s middle school gym.

Keota police officer Doug Conrad said the juveniles were charged with misdemeanors including possession of fireworks, reckless use of fireworks and trespassing.

The July 4 fire left a 20-foot by 25-foot hole in the roof, resulting in water damage to the recently refurbished floor beneath it and some smoke damage.

Firefighters from Keota and Sigourney responded to an early morning report of heavy smoke coming from the school. The burning roof membrane was extinguished quickly, but the damage that ensued caused the entire roof to be replaced.

The fire was investigated by the State Fire Marshal. Debris from fireworks was found on the roof near the site of the blaze.
