Although the Fairfield varsity wrestling squad struggled to find wins Thursday, its JV wrestlers had no trouble earning victories.

Fairfield’s JV team went 3-0 against Fort Madison wrestlers Thursday, both opening and closing the meet with victories in front of its home crowd at Fairfield High School.

Max Spalla won by fall in 1:17 and Austin Francisco earned a pin in 2:37 to open the meet. Alex Hahn pulled out a 7-5 overtime decision in the final match of the evening.

“Those guys started us out right,” said Fairfield head coach Steve Miller. “Spalla and Francisco came out and took care of business, and Hahn ... puts a lot of heart into the sport, and in this sport you’ve got to have heart.”

The JV Trojans will be back in action today at the Centerville JV tournament. Start time is approximately 5:30 p.m.
