Lady Dutch end Trojans run at state team title

By Justin Webster | May 22, 2018

Saturday at the middle school courts, the Fairfield girls tennis team “worked hard” to defeat Burlington Notre Dame 5-4 according to Head Coach Heidi Grunwald who was “very proud” of her team. One of the highlights was senior Cami Schaefer losing in a long three set dual, 6-7, 6-4, 5-10 but immediately turning around and defeating McKenzie Fry and Riley Brueck in the No. 2 doubles match with her new partner, state singles tournament qualifier Yana Gaskell, 6-1, 6-2.

Gaskell defeated Claire Hackenmiller 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles match while fellow state qualifier, three years running, Anatta Charenkul won her match in a two set, 12 game sweep over No. 1 singles player Lydia Becker.

Brueck and Kennedy Rheinschmidt claimed the No. 4 and No. 5 matchups over Hermela Gebremariam and Anna Beasley, respectively, while Nellie Higdon beat Katie Conner 6-3. 6-4 in the No. 6 match.

Charoenkul and Gebremariam won fairly easily over Becker and Hackenmiller 6-3, 7-6 in the top doubles contest and Beasley/Higdon paired for a great match versus Rheinschmidt/Conner although the Trojans fell in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 8-10.

Monday verus Pella

Fairfield traveled to Oskaloosa to face the Lady Dutch in what was technically the first-round of the state playoffs with subsequent matches coming in Waterloo, same as on the singles.

Although Pella defeated the Trojans 5-2, Coach Grunwald said the score “did not reflect how well the girls played.” Grunwald admitted that, “Pella is good,” but clarified that Fairfield, “hung right in there and played well against them.”

The Trojans were down 4-2 after the solo round with Charoenkul winning 6-3, 6-2 over Brooke Jorgensen in the top singles match and Gaskell topping Cecily Johnson 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 slot.

Needing a clean sweep of the doubles matches, Charoenkul and Gebremariam defeated Johnson/Bronwyn Metcalf and Gaskell/Schaefer bested Jorgensen/Lily Roozeboom, unfortunately Beasley and Higdon fell in the final match to Madison Poe and Patience Dykstra.

While the season ends for the Trojans as a team with an 11-2 overall record and a 5-1 SEC mark, Charoenkul and Gaskell are still very much alive in the state singles tournament bracket and will compete in Waterloo May 31 and June 1.
