Lady Trojans beat Mt. Pleasant, Waterloo West over weekend

By Justin Webster | Dec 04, 2017

The Fairfield girls’ basketball team is 4-0 following back-to-back wins this weekend.

First, a 53-48 decision at SEC rival Mt. Pleasant Friday night, followed by a 65-57 home victory versus Waterloo West Saturday evening. The Panthers actually led by a point after the first period Friday, but by halftime the Trojans were up by a basket and never looked back, extending the lead to six headed into the final eight minutes. The win was the first in SEC play for Fairfield, who had previously beaten Iowa City Liberty and Oskaloosa to start the regular season.

Saturday night was an opportunity for Fairfield to test their abilities against a much larger talent pool. Waterloo West has the 10th largest enrollment in the state at 1,469 9-11th graders, compared to the Trojans 375, which, at almost a quarter of the size, comes in at No. 83 among Iowa high schools.

Fairfield shined bright like a diamond, outscoring the Wa-West guests 27-8 in the first quarter alone. By halftime, the Trojans had the visitors from the north more than doubled up, 43-19. And although the WaHawks did outscore the Trojans 38-22 in the second half, Fairfield had long since sealed the deal on their fourth consecutive win to start the 2017-18 campaign.

Statistically, the Trojans were ridiculous. Nicole Buch led the team in points and assists with 26 and 10. She also had a rebound and three steals.

Sophomore Shaylin Drish was enfuego, hitting six of eight three-point attempts in a 25 point, six rebound, three assist, three steal performance. Half of the remaining two touchdowns came from junior Ashley Bloomquist who hit two three-balls and a foul shot for her seven points.

Senior Ashtyn Drish and junior Malory Jones scored three and four points respectively to round out the scoring, and each had six rebounds to tie for the team lead. Next up is Ottumwa Tuesday night at FHS.
