Leadership Iowa to visit Fairfield this week

Feb 27, 2018

Leadership Iowa will visit Fairfield Thursday and Friday.

The organization dubs itself “the state’s premier issues awareness program of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry Foundation.” Participants will learn about Fairfield’s entrepreneurship, tour businesses and speak with area leaders.

Optional activities will begin a day early on Wednesday with tours of Cedar Valley Winery and Agri-Industrial Plastics. The Leadership Iowa class will meet at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center Thursday morning where they will be welcomed by Mayor Ed Malloy and the convention center’s executive director Rustin Lippincott. They will then engage in a discussion on entrepreneurship and innovation on a statewide basis and learn about future trends.

A “Connecting Statewide Leaders Forum and Networking Lunch” will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Thursday. It will be headlined by a panel moderated by Nate Weaton with Weaton Capital. Panelists include Lori Schaefer-Weaton of Agri-Industrial Plastics, Troy Van Beek of Ideal Energy, and Mike Teachout of Focus OneSource. The public is invited to this event. Register at www.iowaabi.org and click on “events.”

Following lunch, the Leadership Iowa class will tour Maharishi University of Management, Sky Factory and Creative Edge Master Shop. The class will end the day with dinner at the Fairfield Golf & Country Club.

Cambridge Investment Research will be the venue for Friday. The class will learn about building rural Iowa’s entrepreneurial network from Sandy Ehrig of Renew Rural Iowa. Participants will then learn about building an entrepreneurial culture and discuss takeaways from the Fairfield session. Mark Cohen of Global ID Group will lead a panel of local business leaders including Meghan Dowd of Dowd International, Josh Laraby of Fairfield Economic Development Association, Dick Smith of Agri-Industrial Plastics and Mario Van Dijk of Global ID Group.

This session of Leadership Iowa was led by a planning team of local Leadership Iowa alumni including Chad Christensen (2011-12), Mark Cohen (2014-15), Rustin Lippincott (2011-12), Nicole Vivaqua (2010-12), Troy Van Beek (2016-17) and Jhonna Wallerich Keller (2016-17).

Through Leadership Iowa, participants travel to eight locations around the state to learn about the issues facing Iowa and its communities and gain a better understanding of the role they can play in addressing those challenges.
