Little Free Library goes up in Fairfield

Deborah Roberts is among the most recent Fairfield residents to install a “Little Free Library” outside their home.

Little Free Libraries are decorated boxes outside a person’s home that hold a handful of books. The books are intended for the public to borrow or replace with another.

“The idea behind the little libraries is to have no fines or due dates,” Roberts said. “People may take a book and keep it, but are encouraged to replace it with another book. I’m hoping to keep mine full of young children’s books.”

Roberts’s library is a little lower than most, being on the curb. She recently reshingled her home, and the library was painted with her house paint and shingled with her new shingles.

“It is one-half block from Pence Elementary School, so I’m looking forward to many children enjoying the library,” she said.

It has a ‘Gnome sweet gnome’ sign on it, as well as a metal fairy on the door with three fairies sitting on a bridge on the roof. All sides have depictions of fairies and inside the library are two hedgehogs hiding in the back.
