Local gymnasts grab gold at state

DES MOINES — The first season of competitive gymnastics for the Fairfield Park and Recreation IDE Gymnastics team wrapped up at the AmeriKids Iowa State Championship on Saturday and Sunday.

The local team once again brought home its share of gold and glory, including four first-place state championships and a third-place team trophy. The meet was hosted by Team Gymnastics Academy in Des Moines.

In Level 3, ages 11-and-up, Olivia McClaran was named state champion in vault as well as state champion in all-around. Sarah Swanson earned a state championship in bars for Level 3, ages 11-and-up; and Michelle Zhang placed first in bars to take the state title for Level 3, age 9. Juliette Pohren also was named state champion in the bars competition for Novice Optionals, all ages.

Second-place winners were Helen Drish, Swanson and Zhang for floor exercises; McClaran, Ashlyn Worley and Swanson for beam; Ashlyn Elmore and Danae Drish for vault; and McClaran for bars. Swanson was named second-place all-around winner for Level 3, ages 11-and-up.

Third-place winners included Elmore, Gracey Simmering and Danae Drish on bars; Sydney Clark, Bryanna Popejoy, and Helen Drish on vault; McClaran and Pohren on floor exercises; and Pohren on beam. Third-place all-around winners were Michelle Zhang for Level 3, age 9; Helen Drish for Level 2, ages 10-12; and Pohren in Novice Optionals, all ages.

Fourth-place winners on beam were Madalyn Rauscher, Zhang, Danae Drish and Clark. Worley and Helen Drish took home fourth place on bars; Libby Ferrel, Worley, Danae Drish and Clark placed fourth in floor exercises; and Worley and Pohren won fourth place in the vault. Fourth place in all-around competition went to Worley in Level 2; Clark in Level 3; and Danae Drish in Novice Optionals.

Additionally, IDE Gymnastics won the third-place Level 3 team trophy as well as the fifth-place team trophy for Level 2. The trophies are on display at the sign-in counter of the Roosevelt Recreation Center in Fairfield.

Members of the gymnastics team, coached by Jeff and Jeanne Ide of Brighton, will be on their way to the national competition in St. Joseph, Mo., June 7-9. Members of the trampoline team will travel to Fort Lauderdale for nationals June 18-23.

Coach Jeff Ide said he’s very pleased with his teams’ results.

“For a first-year team, these athletes have done remarkably well. I’m excited at how much these kids have accomplished already,” the head coach said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see some national champions coming home to Fairfield in June.”
