Local high schools to hold graduation

By DIANE VANCE | May 15, 2014

High school seniors in three area districts will receive diplomas Sunday, capping secondary education for about 172 students.

Van Buren High School graduation for 52 students begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the high school gym.

The Class of 2014 valedictorian and salutatorian are brothers, Noah Stovall and Jonah Stovall, respectively.

That announcement and senior class awards ceremony were this morning at school.

The Senior Ensemble will perform “Forever Young,” and the concert band will play “The Ides of March.”

Mary Dawn Schuck, director of curriculum and instruction is the graduation guest speaker.

The class flower is an orange rose; the class colors are black and white.

Graduating students and parents will be seated in chairs on the gym floor, and everyone else is seated in the bleachers.

Cardinal High School

Cardinal High School graduation begins at 2 p.m. Sunday in the school gym. Approximately 72 seniors could graduate, but grades are not final until Friday afternoon. That also delays the naming of the class valedictorian and salutatorian.

“We have three top students, but it’s so close, we don’t know yet who will be our valedictorian and our salutatorian,” said Cardinal guidance counselor Sara Swanson. “We usually don’t announce the top honors until graduation.”

Swanson said typically three students are selected to speak at graduation.

The senior class awards ceremony begins at 9:15 a.m. Friday at school.

A baccalaureate service was Sunday.

The class flower is a white carnation with red tips; the senior class colors are red and silver.

The class has selected “You’re Gonna Miss This,” by Trace Adkins as its song. The class motto is “We met as strangers, grew as classmates and leave as friends.”

Pekin High School

Pekin High School celebrates graduation at 2 p.m. Sunday in the school gym with 48 seniors.

The Class of 2014 has four valedictorians: Jessica Horras, Clade Millikin, Tiana Slaney and Samantha Wright.

Class secretary Hannah Robison, and president of the class and student body, Eric Adam, are graduation speakers this year.

The class motto is “Remember yesterday, dream for tomorrow, live for today.”

The class song is “We’re All in This Together.”

The class colors are red and silver; the class flower is a purple African violet.

The school band will perform Sunday at the ceremony.

Graduating students and parents will be seated in chairs on the gym floor, and everyone else is seated in the bleachers.

Fairfield High School holds graduation at 2 p.m. June 1 in Trojan Stadium.

Maharishi School will have graduation ceremonies at 1:30 p.m. June 8 in the school auditorium.
