Local state cross country qualifiers

By Justin Webster | Oct 24, 2017

Fairfield’s Ashley Bloomquist is the lone local runner headed to the state Cross Country meet at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge Oct. 28 that doesn’t attend Pekin High School.

The junior runner qualified with a time of 20:06.6, good for third at the qualifier held in Pella and 28th overall in the state in Class 3A.

Two top competitors Bloomquist is all-too-familiar with are Fort Madison’s senior duo in Sierra Howardson and Brett Schneider. The pair qualified in 19:50 and 20:03, respectively, and have been rival runners for the Trojan standout all season.

The girls 3A race starts promptly at noon on the 28th and the awards ceremony for the entire 3A class will be presented at the golf course at 1:20 p.m.

If Bloomquist is going to have a legitimate chance at a state championship, she will need to challenge the top runners in the state which includes Center Point’s sophomore Adrianna Katcher who ran 18:40, Grinnell’s sophomore Mary Blanchard 18:43 and Wahlert freshman Gabby Moran 18:48.

Pekin

Coach Davis Eidahl is exactly where most would expect his Pekin Cross Country teams to be this time of year with full rosters on both the boys and girls teams headed to Fort Dodge.

The Pekin boys finished first out of 27 class 1A teams they hosted at Wildwood Park in Ottumwa, while the girls finished third out of 22 schools to compete.
