Lord’s Cupboard urges low-income residents to update DHS information

Oct 19, 2016

The Lord’s Cupboard food pantry urges those who receive SNAP benefits to make sure their addresses are up-to-date with the Department of Human Services.

Each December, the Lord’s Cupboard distributes Holiday Meal Boxes to low-income residents to help make the holiday season brighter. An invitation to claim a Holiday Meal Box will soon be mailed to everyone in Jefferson County who receives SNAP, and the address on file with DHS is the one which will be used.

“We don’t want anyone to miss out on their Christmas boxes, because we know that when you’re already living paycheck to paycheck, the holidays can be a stressful time financially,” said Laura Cohen, coordinator.

The Holiday Meal Boxes will be packed by community volunteers the evening of Dec. 15 and then distributed the next morning to those who have registered to receive one.

Fund-raising events planned

The Lord’s Cupboard also wants to inform the community about two upcoming events.

Saturday, the Fairfield Hy-Vee will be doing a grill-out to benefit the food pantry. Grilled food will be available for purchase 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and all proceeds go to The Lord’s Cupboard. Volunteers will be on-hand to answer any questions and to accept any cash or check donations.

The next Lord’s Cupboard Trivia Night fundraiser will be Nov. 18 at Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. Cohen said the event grows more popular each time it is held, so people are urged to mark their calendars and to watch The Lord’s Cupboard’s Facebook page for more details and for the date tickets will go on sale.

The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County serves as the county’s sole emergency food pantry and serves about 500 families per month. More than one-third of those served by the pantry are under the age of 18.

Donations of food or cash are accepted at The Lord’s Cupboard from 1-4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
