Volunteers prepare 500 boxes every December for The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County to distribute to families in need. The organization is currently collecting items and funding for this year’s boxes.

The Lord’s Cupboard is seeking help from the community to prepare for its Holiday Meal Boxes distribution.

Between now and Dec. 6, the Jefferson County community is invited to donate non-perishable items needed for the 500 boxes to be distributed in December to low-income households that have registered to receive one.

The non-perishable items needed are:

• Tuna, 5 ounces cans or pouches.

• Chicken-noodle soup, 10.5-ounce cans.

• Tomato soup, 10.5-ounce cans.

• Diced tomatoes, 14.5-ounce cans.

• Boxes of “Helper” for hamburger, tuna, or chicken.

• Spaghetti sauce, cans only.

• Corn or green beans, 15-ounce cans.

Monetary donations also are needed, as the boxes contain many fresh items which must be purchased, explained Laura Cohen, director of The Lord’s Cupboard.

A family’s complete Holiday Meal Box can be sponsored for $28.

To sponsor a Holiday Meal Box or to donate to the program, donations can be made in person at The Lord’s Cupboard, sent by mail to 303 N. Fourth St., Fairfield 52556, or made online at www.LordsCupboard.org.

The annual packing of the boxes will be Dec. 14. Volunteers, wearing comfortable shoes and a jacket, should arrive at the Nazarene Family Center by 5:30 p.m.

Cohen said up-to-date information about donating and volunteering can be found on The Lord’s Cupboard’s Facebook page.

The Lord’s Cupboard of Jefferson County is the county’s emergency food pantry and distributes about 6,000 food orders per year. Donations of food or cash are always accepted at The Lord’s Cupboard, which is open from 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
