Lorraine Frances Samons, 87, died, Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014. at Klein Center in Burlington.

A graveside memorial service was held this morning at Leando Cemetery in Douds, with Pete Gardner officiating.

Miss Samons was born Aug. 5, 1927, in Fairfield, the daughter of of Nobel E. and Myrtle Gilliland Samons.

She was educated in the Jefferson County rural schools, Batavia and Fairfield high schools. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Parsons College in Fairfield and a master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri.

She was a longtime teacher in the Walnut and Round Prairie township rural schools, Batavia Elementary School, the Department of Defense schools in Germany and Okinawa, and the Burlington community schools from which she retired in June 1989.

She strongly believed in and supported the educational organization to which she belonged, and like most teachers, continued to remain current in all aspects of education.

Her greatest interests were involvement in her family, her profession, in travel and people in general. She was a member of Retired School Personnel, Alpha – Delta, Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority and Burlington Woman’s Club.

Miss Samons is survived by cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, George and Richard Samons; and three sisters, Ruth and Irma Samons and Lois Parrish.
