M.U.M. fall tree planting Saturday

Sep 27, 2017

Maharishi University of Management will host two tree planting sessions Saturday.

The first is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the second is from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Trees will be planted along Highway 1 near Crow Creek by the high rise dorms and the pedestrian bridge.

The event is co-sponsored by the city of Fairfield.

Volunteers will be planting crabapple and redbud trees. They are asked to bring a water bottle and gloves if needed.

Snacks are provided along with tree planting instruction.

Parking is available at the Gateridge Court Office Building.

The tree planting piggybacks on many efforts to increase greenery at the university.

In April, volunteers planted 100 trees around campus as part of Branching Out, financially supported by Alliant Energy and administered by Trees Forever.

Tom Brooks, chairman of the M.U.M. tree committee, said at the time that volunteers would plant London planetrees along the sides of Badget Drive by the tennis courts.

About 35 white pine trees will be planted around the courts themselves to create a wind buffer. Brooks said the tree committee chose pine trees instead of deciduous trees because it doesn’t want leaves blowing on the courts.
