Main break forces boil advisory for rural water customers

Dec 05, 2013

A water main break 3 miles north of Fairfield has prompted the Wapello Rural Water Association to call for a boil advisory for Maharishi Vedic City, Salina and rural areas near Fairfield.

Fairfield water superintendent Carl Chandler said the boil order applies only to customers of the Wapello Rural Water Association.

According to the Wapello Rural Water Association, water should be boiled for one minute and then cooled before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice.

Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes without boiling.

The water main break occurred on 170th Street and Juniper Avenue this morning. Due to a loss of water pressure while the main was broken, bacteria could have contaminated the water. Officials from the Wapello Rural Water Association will collect samples from places around the area Friday.
