Man sentenced for statue theft

By Rusty Ebert, Ledger correspondent | Jan 03, 2018

MT. PLEASANT - A Burlington man was sentenced recently for his role in the theft and destruction of the CCC statue at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park in July.

Gregory Michael Crall, Jr., was sentenced Dec. 4 in Henry County to 10 years in prison for theft in the first degree, concurrent to a Des Moines felony case. He was fined $1,000, which was suspended.

Crall was charged in Henry County because that is where he sold for scrap the pieces of the bronze statue which was valued at over $22,000.

Crall was also charged with stealing the bronze “Lazy Days” statue from Railroad Park in Donnellson around the same time as the CCC statue theft.

A co-defendant, Skylah Beach, was also charged in the CCC statue theft and is awaiting trial in Henry County.

Meanwhile, the state of Iowa has approved replacing the statue, which was donated to Lacey-Keosauqua Park by the Friends of Lacey.

The state executive council this fall approved paying for its replacement out of state tax funds. The Department of Natural Resources requested an emergency allocation in the amount of $23,500.00. The request was to cover loss, according to the council’s minutes. The state auditor’s office reviewed the request and recommended allocation, subject to audit of actual invoices. The council approved it.
