Joseph Mayorga

Joseph Mayorga Jr., 35, of Lee County, received a sentence of 50 years in prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to second degree murder of a Fairfield man.

The victim was James Nelson, 47, who was found dead in a Lee County park in February 2017.

Mayorga will owe $150,000 in restitution in addition to court costs. The sentence was handed down by District 8 Judge Mark Kruse. Mayorga will be eligible for parole after serving 35 years.

On Feb. 11 of last year, Lee County Sheriff’s deputies found Nelson deceased at a Lee County roadside park near Weaver. An autopsy revealed Nelson had been killed by a single gunshot to the head. Mayorga was arrested shortly after the incident on unrelated charges and became a suspect. After seven months of investigation, Lee County deputies charged Mayorga with first degree murder, which he pleaded down to second degree murder.
