Master Gardeners; Farm Bureau Women; Women's Club Garden Department; Health Center Auxiliary

Jefferson County Master Gardeners met Feb. 24 at the Jefferson County ISU Extension Office, with 14 members present.

President Julie Johnston called the meeting to order. Gerri Lyon read the secretary and treasurer’s report, and both were approved.

Jan Swinton gave an update on the Pathfinders RC&D greenhouse project. The drip irrigation system is scheduled for installation, tilling is planned for raised beds and work schedules were discussed. Volunteers will be working 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Other work schedules will be emailed with sign-up opportunities. Early-season plantings of lettuce, radishes and more could be on the school menu this school year.

Aideen Vega-VanAuken reported Seed Savers Exchange Workshops at the Fairfield Public Library are 7:30-9 p.m. March 6 and 13. The sessions are free to the public.

The group is planning a Jefferson County Master Gardener Spring Garden Gala for 2015. Details will be announced.

Wapello County Master Gardeners have invited the Jefferson County Master Gardeners to participate in the Home & Garden Show through Sunday at the Bridgeview Center in Ottumwa. It is an opportunity for volunteer hours.

Sandi Dimmitt, Julie Johnston and Toni Griffith attended the Home & Garden Show in Des Moines. They reported on “straw bale gardening” and more.

Many of members will be attending the Henry County Master Gardeners Symposium Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Reports will be given at the next meeting set for 5 p.m. March 24 at the Jefferson County ISU Extension Office.




Jefferson County Farm Bureau Women will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pizza Ranch in Fairfield.

Sharon Schafer will be hostess. Roll-call response will be the education and people of Russia.

Mary Carol Fish will give a program about her trip to China.

All women are invited to attend.




Fairfield Women’s Club Garden Department will meet Thursday morning at the McElhinny House.

Coffee will be served at 9 a.m., followed by a program presented by Master Gardner Kim Keller on making bows.

The Jefferson County Health Center Auxiliary Board honored three Secret Valentines for their many years of volunteering.

Wilma Hootman and Ernie Riepe were honored for their work at The Bargain Box, and Debbie Riepe was honored for all the things she does at the Gift Shop.

The women were given a vase of red and pink roses, and Ernie Riepe received a heart-shaped box of Valentine chocolates; plus they each were given a Valentine card, with a token of the auxiliary’s appreciation.

President Sharyn Workman presented the Secret Valentines gifts and welcomed the guests.
