Dec 06, 2017

Jefferson County Conservation is offering Germinid Meteor Shower viewing from 9-11 p.m. Dec. 13 at Jefferson County Park.

According to Sky & Telescope, the Geminid Meteor Shower is “usually the year’s best and most reliable, with upward of 100 meteors per hour.” The meteor shower will begin to be visible on Thursday and last through about Dec. 17. This year, it will peak around 2 a.m. on the night of Dec. 13 and morning of Dec. 14.

Watch from home or join naturalist Therese Cummiskey at the park. The evening will start with an introduction at 9 p.m. indoors at the Jefferson County Park Nature Center. Then participants will head out to sit a spell and watch the sky.

Participants should dress warm and bring along a sleeping bag or blanket to lay on or a lawn chair to sit in. Hot chocolate will be provided, so bring along a thermos. Participants must be able to walk approximately .25 miles on uneven trail.

No registration is required.
