More local residents win at Iowa State Fair

Local residents have won awards at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

Youth from across the state competed in the FFA Breeding Swine Show. The Reserve Champion Duroc Gilt was shown by Bridget Fritchen of Packwood.

In the FFA Horse Show, Reserve Champion Light Horse/Pony Pleasure Driving went to Taylor Reynolds, Pekin.

The FFA Photography contest judged before the start of the 2017 Iowa State Fair. In Theme Class, third place was awarded to Hollie Nelson, Lockridge.

In the Iowa State Fair Food Department’s Foods Made With Honey competition, entries were judged on the best use of honey as the sole sweetener. Michelle Burgmeier of Lockridge earned recognition in several categories: Bread & Rolls — Honey Wheat Bread, third place; Bread & Rolls — Honey Oatmeal Bread, third place; Quick Breads — Honey Banana Nut Bread, second place; Honey Creations — Honey Chocolate Chip Cookies, second place; Honey Creations — Honey Cookies, second place; Honey Creations — Honey Drinks, first place.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country, with 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries this year.

Frequently ranked as one of the top events in the country, the Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa. The 2017 fair was Aug. 10-20.
