More titles for Pekin

More track meets, more titles.

For the 38th time in the past 50 years, the Pekin Panther boys’ track and field team captured a conference title.

On May 4, the Panthers won the Southeast Iowa Super Conference-North Division championship at Winfield-Mt. Union High School with 181 points. Lone Tree was runner-up (92), Wapello third (89), followed by Mediapolis (75), Columbus Community (57), Winfield (51), Louisa Muscatine (22), Highland (16) and Iowa Mennonite (4).

Among the highlights for Pekin, Trever Northup took gold in the shot put (47-06.75). Malcom Myers won the 3,200 (10:29.52), followed by runner-up Ryan Millikin (10:29.82).

Chandler Eckley, Sam Roth, Cameron Millikin and Myers took gold in the 4x800 (8:27.27). Tyler Copeland, Monico Requena, Roth and Ryan Millikin won the distance medley (3:40.92).

Copeland, Levi Long, Chase Eckley and Requena won the 4x200 (1:33.29). Chandler Eckley took gold in the 800 (2:00.63). Long won the 400 hurdles (56.90) and Ryan Millikin won the 1,600 (4:42.73).

Copeland, Dayne Eckley, Chase Eckley and Requena took gold in the 4x100 (43.82), and Zach Conger, Roth, Chandler Eckley and Isaiah Wittrock won the 4x400 (3:26.61).

“Our boys ran and competed very well,” said Pekin head coach Davis Eidahl. “We made a few changes getting ready for the district meet. We’ll see how things work out. Overall, our team is starting to peak at the right time. We have to be patient.”

The Pekin Panther girls’ team also won the conference championship. Pekin had 148 points, Mediapolis 101, Highland 76, Louisa-Muscatine 69, Winfield 45, Wapello 43, Columbus 41, Lone Tree 32 and Iowa Mennonite 31.

This was Pekin’s 11th consecutive conference crown.

Among the highlights for Pekin, Willoh Mills won the discus (94-11) and the shot put (33-06.25) and Ellie Ledger took gold in the high jump (4-10).

Zoey Wright, Cate Roth, Kaylee Linder and Emilee Linder won gold in the 800 sprint medley (1:54.74), and Cari Duwa, Remi Duwa, Shea Dahlstrom and Mackenzie Martin won the 4x800 (10:48.72).

Kaylee Linder won the 100-meter dash (12.70) and anchored Pekin’s gold medal run in the 4x200 (1:49.51) with Wright, Emilee Linder and Roth.

Remi Duwa earned gold in the 800 (2:29.34) and 1,500 (5:19.65). Wright, Emilee Linder, Roth and Kaylee Linder won the 4x100 (51.00).
