Morris brace gives USA wild win vs. Martinique

Jul 13, 2017

(Reuters) Jordan Morris scored twice, including the winner, as part of a wild five-goal second half as the United States defeated Martinique 3-2 in a Group B match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday.

The U.S. and Panama each have four points (1-0-1) but the Americans lead the group because they have scored more goals. Omar Gonzalez and Morris gave the Americans the lead early in the second half but Kevin Parsemain scored in the 66th and 74th minutes for Martinique (1-1-0) to tie the score at 2-2.

Morris then scored his fourth international goal in the 76th minute when he ran onto a service to the middle of the box from Gyasi Zardes and ripped a shot past goalkeeper Kevin Olimpa.

Gonzalez scored his second goal in 42 U.S. appearances in the 54th minute. Martinique cleared a corner kick to the top of the box but U.S. forward Paul Arriola gathered the free ball and shot. The rebound came to Gonzalez and his put-back left Olimpa no time to react. Morris made it 2-0 in the 64th with a left-footed redirect at the right post off a service by Eric Lichaj.

But Martinique needed only two minutes to score as Parsemain put a 22-yard shot past goalkeeper Brad Guzan at the right post to make it 2-1.

Parsemain was credited with the tying goal when a pass by teammate Johan Audel deflected off him.

The Gold Cup is the biannual championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean. The top two teams from the three groups and the two best third-place teams qualify for the quarterfinals.

Earlier in the evening at Tampa, Panama beat Nicaragua (0-2-0) 2-1.

The final Group B matches are Saturday at Cleveland, Ohio, when Panama plays Martinique followed by Nicaragua vs. the U.S.
