Mt. Pleasant church plans 75-year celebration

Jul 25, 2014

MT. PLEASANT — Faith Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant will be holding a 75-year celebration at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Rev. Dennis Meeker, pastor of Life Lutheran Church in Kibera, Kenya, will be speaking at the event. Dinner will follow for all attending in the fellowship room.

The first anniversary celebration of the 75th anniversary was held March 2, with the Rev. Robert Koch of Northglen, Colorado., speaking. He is the son of Alton Koch, who was the first pastor of the church.

An additional celebration will be held Oct. 26, with the Rev. Thomas Ogilvie of Austin, Minnisota, as guest speaker. The community is invited to join in the celebration.

Seventy-five years ago on July 23, 1939, the Rev. Alton Koch conducted the first Lutheran service in Mt. Pleasant at city hall with 18 attending. He had been assigned as a missionary in the area and had already started services in Wapello in May 1939. In January of 1941, the congregation adopted its constitution, the name Faith Lutheran Church and applied for membership in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.

Services continued in the Mt. Pleasant City Hall and Farmers Union Hall until 1942 when a house and adjacent lot at 511 E. Broadway were purchased. The house was used for both the parsonage and the chapel.

Through donations of war bonds and peace thank offerings, a pre-fabricated chapel was purchased and erected on the lot adjacent to the parsonage on Broadway. Dedication of the chapel was held Oct. 30, 1949. Services were conducted at the Broadway location until 1970. The home and chapel on Broadway were purchased by Iowa Wesleyan College.

A new church with an educational wing was constructed, and dedication took place March 8, 1970, at the current location. By 1972, a parsonage was constructed on the same property.

Remodeling of the sanctuary and a new addition including additional classrooms, a larger fellowship room and office space were completed in 1994. Additional classroom space provided the community to establish a faith-based preschool, Son Shine Academy, which began in the 2000-2001 school year.

Faith Lutheran Church has been served by six pastors during it’s 75 years: the Rev. Alton Koch, 1939-1981; the Rev. Craig DuBois, 1981-1983; the Rev. Daniel Krueger, 1984-1988; the Rev. Maurice Lind, 1988-1995; the Rev. Keith Haerer, 1996-2005; and the Rev. Michael Scudder, 2006 to present.
