Nature center hosting meteor shower sessions

Aug 08, 2013

Naturalist Therese Cummiskey will be hosting two sessions of meteor watching Sunday night and Monday morning at Jefferson County Park.

“You’ll have to stay up late or get up early to enjoy the Perseid Meteor showers,” said Cummiskey. “But with several dozen meteors an hour streaking across the sky, it will be worth it.”

The sessions are planned for 11:30 p.m. Sunday and 4:30 a.m. Monday.

Cummiskey explained the unusual hours for the programs were scheduled because Perseid Meteor showers tend to strengthen in number as late night deepens into midnight and typically produce the most meteors in the wee hours before dawn.

Participants must bring a lawn chair and are encouraged to apply bug repellent and meet Cummiskey at the Jefferson County Park Nature Center.

“We’ll hike to a dark location in the park and settle down for an hour or so of meteor watching,” Cummiskey said.

Preregistration for the meteor-watching sessions is appreciated, but not required. For preregistration or information, call the Jefferson County Nature Center at 472-4421.
