New Area Agency on Aging formed

Dec 03, 2012

As a result of a legislative mandate presented this spring to reduce Iowa’s Area Agencies on Aging from 13 to six, Seneca AAA in the Ottumwa area and Generations AAA in the Davenport area chose to work together to create and facilitate a new service area comprised of their existing counties with the addition of the Southeast Iowa Region in Burlington and will be known as Milestones AAA.

Other AAAs throughout the state have gone through similar courses of action.

The process consisted of the submission of a written “Request for Application.” Both Seneca and Generations worked together to create the document submitted to the Iowa Department on Aging and the Commission on Aging. The applications have been read and accepted. This proposal and new service plan will be known as Milestones Area Agency on Aging serving Mahaska, Keokuk, Lucas, Monroe, Wapello, Jefferson, Wayne, Appanoose, Davis, Van Buren, Lee, Henry, Des Moines, Louisa, Muscatine, Scott and Clinton counties.

Seneca AAA currently serves seniors and family caregivers living in Appanoose, Davis, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Van Buren, Wapello and Wayne counties. Programs include case management, nutrition and family caregiver support along with other evidence-based programming. The transition to the proposed consolidated area will start immediately and will be ready to rollout on July 1. Seneca’s Executive Director Connie Holland and staff are working with Generations’ Director Christa Merritt, to make the transition seamless to existing clients.

Holland said, “Current clients should not see a change in the services they receive. Programming will remain the same along with most staff positions. We are excited to be combining our service area with Generations and look forward to providing services in the combined area known as Milestones Area Agency on Aging.”
