Dementia is a progressive disease. A family member or friend watches a loved one experiencing more and more difficulty with simple daily tasks, not recognizing once familiar objects, surroundings, people. At some point, the family member or friend become something he or she did not bargain for: a caregiver.

As that role increases and intensifies, it becomes more and more important that the caregiver attend not just to the loved one, but to themselves. Family members who take on the caregiving role are under a lot of stress – usually for a long time, according to the organizers.

Regular participation in a support group can greatly help keep the caregiver stay healthier and more positive, said the organizers. Such a group provides a place to exchange practical information on caregiving problems and possible solutions, to talk through challenges and ways of coping, share feelings, needs, and concerns.
