No challenge for Fairfield in first two rounds of girls’ team tennis

By Justin Webster | May 14, 2018

This Wednesday, the Trojan girls tennis team will compete in the individual regionals at Fairfield middle school when the six members will break into two doubles pairs and two solo competitors as each tries to win a 16-team bracket and advance one round closer to state.

This past Saturday May 12, Fairfield as a unit stomped their “competition” en route to advancing through the first two rounds of the playoffs.

First, the Trojans beat Centerville 5-0 in the opening match, losing just one game in the process. Just one.

Anatta Charoenkul defeated Lauren Oglesby 6-0, 6-0

Yana Gaskell defeated Chelsey Boettcher 6-0, 6-0

Camielle Schaefer defeated Brason Bulechek 6-0, 6-0

Hermela Gebremariam defeated Katie Kirby 6-0, 6-1

Anna Beasley defeated Elizabeth Moriarty 6-0, 6-0

The second round was than played against Davis County who also offered little resistance to the Trojan netters in a 5-0 loss. Fairfield lost 11 games in the second go-round, but only had one really competitive challenger while sweeping Davis County.

Anatta Charoenkul defeated Abby Vaughn 6-0, 6-0

Yana Gaskell defeated Hailey Swan 6-0, 6-0

Camielle Schaefer defeated Riley Jones 6-1, 6-0

Hermela Gebremariam defeated Avery Thompson 6-3, 6-4

Anna Beasley defeated Morgan Klaus 6-1, 6-2

Next up for Head Coach Heidi Grunwald and her squad is the regional final this Saturday at the Fairfield middle school with their undetermined oppponent, due to a rain out last Saturday, likely Fort Madison or Burlington-Notre Dame with the matchup set later today.
