Noah’s Ark blood drive in honor of Cohen

Jun 03, 2013

Noah’s Ark Animal Foundation is sponsoring a Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center blood drive June 10 in honor of Cody Cohen.

Cohen, a 2013 Fairfield High School graduate, was diagnosed in December with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare blood cancer, and prescribed a bone marrow transplant as treatment.

In March, Cohen’s disease had progressed from MDS into acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), said Dawn Safrit, executive director of Noah’s Ark.

Cohen has received one round of chemo and is currently undergoing his second round, she continued.

By hosting a blood drive, Noah’s Ark officials hope to facilitate not only the needs that Cohen is facing, but also the needs of others, said Safrit.

The blood drive will be from 2-7 p.m. June 10 in the community room of Noah’s Ark.

Walk-in donors are welcome, but those who would like an appointment can call Dawn Safrit at 472-6080.

Donors who last gave blood on or before April 15 are eligible to donate again June 10.

According to Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center officials, blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about an hour to complete.

Donors must be at least 16 years old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. A blood donor card or other photo identification is required. A 16-year-old donor must present a signed parental consent form each time he or she donates. The forms for 16-year-old donors and more information about donating blood is available at www.bloodcenter.org.
