Officer pursues stolen car into Batavia

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | Apr 09, 2018

A vehicle was reported stolen from Kum & Go in Fairfield early Thursday morning.

The Fairfield Police Department’s call log indicated that around 1:19 a.m., a subject left their car running while going into Kum & Go, and another subject got in the car and drove away.

Law enforcement was alerted of the stolen car headed west on Highway 34. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Miller happened to be in the area and pursued the vehicle on Highway 34.

The pursuit ended in Batavia, where the suspect abandoned the vehicle and escaped capture on foot. Miller reported the suspect appeared to be a man wearing a bandana over his face with a black hoody and black backpack. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Fairfield Police Lt. Colin Smith is asking residents to remember to lock their cars, and not to leave them running unattended even for a short time.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Jefferson County Law Center at 472-4146.
