Eighty-five pitches is all it took Fairfield’s Jackson Weaton to dispense Fort Madison 12-0 in the rain-delayed, mercy rule-shortened Class 3A substate 5 district 10 baseball game Saturday afternoon at FMS.

The soon-to-be senior lasted all five innings and allowed just one hit while walking one and striking out out eight.

Offensively, Cade Lisk, Cooper Drish, Hunter Drish and Kosta Papazoglou each hit safely once while Jimmy Kurka, Hunter Hoskins and Tristin Waugh collected two hits a piece.

Waugh went 2-2 with two homeruns, two runs scored and a walk drawn while accumulating seven RBI in the first round victory.

Hunter Hoskins was 2-3 with two runs scored as well and the senior racked up three RBI at the plate.

Tonight

While Head Coach Josh Allison wasn’t ready to reveal his starter for tonight’s 7 p.m. district 10 final against Iowa City Liberty, he did say they just need to stay focused and ready and they’d be OK even though they’ve already beaten the Lightning three times in the last five weeks.

Liberty advanced to the second round with a 3-1 extra-innings victory over Washington in the early game Saturday, improving their overall record to 11-21 after starting the season 0-7 and 4-12.

The loss for the Demons ends their season at 21-12 after finishing tied for second in the Southeast Conference with Mt. Pleasant at 11-4, 1.5 games behind the champion Trojans.

Wednesday

Solon will host the substate 5 final, with a win for Fairfield tonight securing the district 10 slot for the Trojans who would face the winner of the district 9 matchup between conference rivals Clear Creek-Amana (19-19) and the 30-10 Spartans.

First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the winner headed to state.
