The Trojan varsity softball team is winding down the regular season, and has just one more opponent before opening postseason play Saturday at home.

Fairfield continued its winning ways this past weekend when it swept Keokuk and then went 1-1 in the Ottumwa Classic. The Trojans bested Solon 11-7, but could not hold off Southeast Polk as they fell 9-6.

Haley Beard was at the top of her game against the Chiefs, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six in six innings of shutout softball. Allison Rebling came on to pitch the seventh, walking one batter but surrendering no further damage.

Shay Drish went 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run. Ashtyn Drish went 1-4 with two RBIs and a double. Sara Trent hit a solo homer and walked twice. Beard went 1-3 and drove in a run.

Trent hit another home run against the Chiefs in Game 2, finishing 2-3 with three RBIs and a run. Beard also connected for a round-tripper as she collected three RBIs and a run. Brynna Bowman doubled and scored a run. Shay and Ashtyn Drish each had two hits, as did Kaylee Watson. All three also scored a run. Kenady Waugh walked, drove in a run and scored twice.

Beard pitched three innings to get the win, allowing no hits and no runs with only one free pass. Rebling held the Chiefs hitless and scoreless as well in her two innings of work.

Fairfield got the better of Solon in this crazy back-and-forth game. Solon led 3-1 after four innings, but Fairfield used a five spot in the fifth to push ahead 6-3. Solon scored three times over the next two innings to tie the game, only to see the Trojans put up yet another five spot in the top of the seventh to lead 11-6. Solon answered with one run but that was as close as it got.

Ashtyn Drish had a four-hit game as she doubled, drove in a run and scored three times. Watson went 3-4 with three batted in and one run. Trent doubled and drove in two. Bowman was 2-5 with a double and two runs.

Rebling pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and six walks to go with three punchouts. Bowman pitched 2.1 innings to earn the victory as she allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and no walks with two whiffs.

Southeast Polk scored four in the third and five in the fifth as the Rams took this one from the Trojans.

Trent homered yet again, driving in three RBIs to go with a double and two runs. Rebling doubled and drove in one. Waugh went 2-4 with an RBI and a run. Shay Drish was 2-3 with a run. Lily Hoskins singled and drove in a run.

Bowman worked six innings, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits and three walks.

The Trojans’ record is now 31-7 with only two games left. They will be played tonight at home against Mt. Pleasant in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Postseason action begins at 7 p.m. Saturday when the Trojans host the winner of the Keokuk-Fort Madison game to be played Thursday in Keokuk.
