Packwood native Marjorie Ann Parish publishes book based on ‘sweetheart letters’

Jul 31, 2017

Marjorie Ann Parish, who grew up in Packwood and graduated from Pekin High School, has written a book “Sweetheart Letters.”

The book is the sweetheart letters Will Shank courted Corda Buchanan with, and to which she faithfully responded. Embedded in the more-than-a-century-old letters are thoughtful moments with family, friends and everyday life. The letters give readers a window into rural America — most specifically southeast Iowa — beginning in 1898.

The letters, preserved through the decades, are now available to the public through Parish’s book, which also includes a short summary of each letter and additional information about the family.

Parish is the daughter of Clair and Elizabeth Klingaman, who owned and operated Packwood Telephone Company. She is the sister of Judy Atwood, who with husband Wayne, farms a few miles from Packwood.
