Panthers run ‘Grade Race’

By Justin Webster, Ledger sports editor | Sep 26, 2017

PACKWOOD — The Panther Cross Country team hosted its annual “Grade Race” Saturday, and 54-year coach Davis Eidahl explained the benefits of the unique format: “What I like is that there is pressure on some runners to step up that have not had to before. Runners are depending on the runners just in their own grade. This type of meet makes every runner important.”

The meet has 12 races, boys and girls grades seventh through 12th, with the top three scored from each school.

Boys

First place came easily for seniors Isaiah Wittrock and Sam Roth who finished 1-2 in the elders event with fellow 12th-grader Clayton Greiner finishing seventh. The trio averaged 20:27.67 for the 5K. The sophomore boys finished second only to Fort Madison with Colten Glosser winning the event with a time of 17:42, followed by third place Tanner Conger at 18:07, and 16th place for Brad Gaines who crossed the line at 23:43. The freshmen finished fourth with third, 12th, and 19th place finishes from Brady Millikin, Cole Earnest, and Kaden Pollock, respectively.

Girls

The junior class led the way on the girls’ side with five of the top 10 finishers in the 10th grade division. The fast five were Hollie Loper, Hunter Lock, Kelly Myers, Shannon Saeger, and Katie Jones finishing 1-2-3-7-and 10th. The sophomores also stood out with Remi Duwa winning the heat at 22:11, Sammi Reinier finishing ninth, Kira Smith following in 13th, and Tara Kielkopf in 15th. The seniors finished third, but Jordyn Earnest, Hailey Beam, and Kodi Dailey all posted top 10 finishes with 12th place Mackenna Myers just behind the pack at 30:26. Kaitlyn Glosser, 23:34, and Gracie Baetsle, 24:55, were the lone runners for the freshman and were not officially scored.

Coach Eidahl said the team will start its focus on the district and state meet this week as it runs at Iowa City High.
