Panthers to start year at Rockets

By ALLYUS FRITZ/Ledger sports editor | Aug 28, 2014

The Pekin Panthers begin the 2014 season by hosting Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, a team that made the Class 1A playoffs last season and finished the year 6-4.

New head coach of the Rockets Russ Bayer was the defensive coordinator for the Albia Blue Demons last year. EBF’s leading receiver last season, Blake Marolf, is now the starting quarterback.

Both teams are run first offenses with new young men under center. Pekin’s new signal-caller is Trever Northup, who is just a sophomore. Much like Kolby Allsup who came before him, Northup is a dual-threat option for the Panthers. Running back Chase Copeland and wide receiver Christian Wittrock should help take some pressure off of Northup.

The Panthers are seeking a win before they travel to Sigourney-Keota next Friday.

Cardinal vs. Southeast Warren: The Comets went just 1-8 last season, but Southeast Warren went 0-9. This is the perfect time for Cardinal to get in the win column and raise the team’s confidence before hosting its first home game next Friday.

Van Buren vs. Lynnville-Sully: The Warriors and the Hawks are both seeking repeat trips to the postseason. Both sides have difficult schedules, so an early win could be huge in the long run.

Pella vs. Washington: The Dutch look to avenge their 28-0 loss to Washington that ruined Pella’s perfect season and stopped them a game short of reaching the UNI-Dome in 2013.

Mt. Pleasant @ Ottumwa: The Panthers look to get back in the win column against Class 4A Ottumwa after going 0-9 last season.
