NEW SHARON — Perhaps there is a team that can give the Panthers a run for their money. So far, the Panthers have yet to find them.

Pekin defeated North Mahaska 42-0 Friday in yet another blowout win. The Panthers have beaten opponents by an average of 37 points on their way to a 5-0 record.

The Panthers did most of their damage in the first quarter. Like most teams, North Mahaska could not contain Pekin senior running back Monico Requena. Requena scored a 47-yard touchdown to begin the game, then followed it up with a 38-yard touchdown run.

Pekin proved it could gain yards through the air, too. Levi Long connected with Chandler Eckley on a 37-yard touchdown pass. Still in the first quarter, Caleb Comstock threw a TD pass to put the Warhawks in a 28-0 hole.

Requena added a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and a 41-yard touchdown run in the third. Levi Rohr made all six of his point-after attempts.

Team stats

Pekin earned most of its 301 yards on the ground, running for 236. North Mahaska gained 38 yards through the air and 94 on the ground.

Pekin faced only five third downs all game, and converted on two of them. North Mahaska was 0-11 in third down conversions, and 1-3 in fourth down conversions.

Individual stats

Long’s 37-yard pass was the only one he threw. Caleb Comstock went 3-5 in passing, gaining 28 yards.

Requena ran the ball 10 times and gained 171 yards. Torell Washington ran it four times for 50 yards. Dayne Eckley had two carries for 12 yards. Keaton Baayen had two touches for 10 yards. Tanner Bainbridge had it once for 8 yards.

Chase Eckley caught one pass for 37 yards. Long caught two for 28 yards.

Long and Baayen led the team in tackles with six apiece. Baayen had one tackle for a loss. Zach Hammes, Skyler Juhl and Kaden Baker contributed five, with Juhl tackling two behind the line of scrimmage.

Bainbridge, Hunter Conger and Connor Reed each had three, with all three tackling at least one for a loss and Reed tackling two. Chandler Eckley and Drake Harbison each had two.

Also recording tackles were Kennan Winn, Ethan Cooksey, Jordan Hixson, Logan Kealey, Quenton Kopp, Washington, Kevin Ramos and Cael Lyle.

Rohr kicked off seven times for a total of 394 yards, averaging 56 yards per kick.

Pekin is enjoying homecoming festivities this week. The football game will be against Cardinal at 7 p.m. Friday.
