Pekin claimed a spot in the Class A football playoffs as the No. 2 seed out of district six with their 14-8 victory at home versus New London Friday night.

Head Coach Brent Blakely credits his defense with securing the much needed victory.

“Our defense was lights out tonight,” said Blakely. “New London is such a big play offense and to contain them and hold them to eight points is incredible,” he added. “The offense did their part in keeping them off the field. We may not have gotten the points we wanted to get, but we did a great job of keeping it out of their hands.”

The Panthers avoided a seven-day wait during their bye week to see if they would be awarded an at-large bid with two losses. Now at 8-1, Coach Blakely can prepare his team without any distractions. With one week remaining in most everyone else’s regular season, Pekin will have to wait to find out who their opponent will be in the first round. Something any coach, including Pekin’s Brent Blakely is more than willing to do.
