Pekin faces huge road test at Montezuma

By ALLYUS FRITZ/Ledger sports editor | Oct 10, 2013

The Pekin Panthers travel Friday to Montezuma.

Both teams are undefeated in Class A District 6 play, setting up a game with colossal consequences. Both teams still have to play BGM Brooklyn, who has managed to stay undefeated up to this point as well.

Montezuma has scored more than 40 points every game this season, while only giving up 22 total points all year.

Speaking of colossal, the Braves have a pair of twins that have been dominating the offensive and defensive line all season. Matthew and Michael Duggan, both 6 foot 6 inches tall and 265 pounds, play on both sides of the ball. Matthew is fourth on the team in tackles, while Michael is fifth. The Panthers have the mighty task of controlling both of them.

“We have to focus on controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and slowing down some of their key performers,” Pekin coach Joe Donovan said. “And not giving up the big play.”

Quarterback Dillon Wilhelm is one of those key performers. Wilhelm hasn’t been asked to pass very much, but the passes he has thrown have gone for big plays. Wilhelm is 23-39, with 469 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season. That means he’s averaging 20.4 yards per completion. Wilhelm has not thrown an interception all year.

The rushing attack for Pekin will have to be in great condition. Quarterback Kolby Allsup, Chase Copeland, Petie Clubb and Tanner Adam will most likely all be called on to run the ball in this game.

District Look

The three-horse race in Class A District 6 is well underway. Pekin’s game at Montezuma will either put the Panthers in the mix for a district title or put them in a distant third. BGM plays at English Valleys. The final two games in the district are between teams that are fighting for the fourth spot in the playoffs.
