Pekin falls to IMS on senior night

The Pekin volleyball team fell to IMS on senior night Tuesday by the score of 24-26, 25-16,17-25, 23-25.

IMS players Olivia Yutzy and Casey Perez led their team to the close victory.

“IMS is a scrappy team and Perez’s tips hurt us,” Pekin coach Ashley Bartels said. “We aren’t used to the setters tipping to spots, so our blocking and defense was slow to get there.”

The Panthers started out strong and nearly took the first two sets. The team’s passing was solid, which resulted in the setters providing a lot of kill opportunities for the hitters.

“The girls played with a lot of heart,” said Bartels. “We are starting to rise on the uphill of our roller coaster.”

Beth Atwood led the Panthers in kills with 14. Tiana Slaney pitched in with eight kills of her own. Taiylor Morgan led in passing with 18. Atwood also led the team in blocks with seven.

Pekin hosts the first round of regionals Tuesday against Wapello. The game is at 7 p.m.
