Pekin girls’ eliminated after 22-3 season

Photo by: Photo submitted by CAREN ROTH The No. 13 ranked Pekin girls’ basketball team fell in overtime of the Iowa Class 2A Region 2 final 44-36 to eighth-ranked Grundy Center Monday night in LeGrand.

The No. 13 ranked Pekin girls’ basketball team lost 44-36 Monday night in overtime of the Iowa Class 2A Region 2 final in LeGrand to No. 8 Grundy Center who improved to 22-1 and are headed to the state tournament in Des Moines next week.

Pekin led 7-6 after eight minutes and although they were outscored 10-9 in the second period, they held even with the top-10 team at 16 points a piece going into the half.

Grundy Center scored nine points in the third quarter while holding the Panthers to just six, giving them a one possession advantage headed into the final frame of the game, but Pekin forced extra time with a 10-7 offensive difference in favor of Head Coach Davis Eidahls’ team in the fourth.

Unfortunately the Spartans sped away with the victory after outscoring the Panthers 12-4 in overtime to secure their spot in the state tournament in Des Moines Feb. 26-March 3.

Leading the Panthers was Haley Gambell who scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting, including 3-5 from the perimeter to go with seven rebounds and four steals. Zoey Wright had nine points off of two three-pointers, and three free throws to go with her four steals, two rebounds and an assist.

Faith Oostra and Paige Winn each had four points. Oostra also had a rebound and an assist, while Winn had two rebounds and two steals.

Emilee Linder and Maci Gambell rounded out the scoring with three points each. Linder also had a defensive rebound, while Maci had six boards, four assists and a block.
