Pekin faced tough competition at the Williamsburg Volleyball Tournament Saturday. The Panthers went 1-3 on the day.

The Panthers started their day facing 11th-ranked in Class 3A Tipton.

“They were a tough opponent,” said Pekin head coach Ken Hutchinson. “They passed extremely well and had multiple options offensively. We had a much better showing in the second set.”

The Panthers dropped both sets, 25-8 and 25-15.

Pekin dropped matches against Bellevue and Williamsburg. Hutchinson said both teams were solid opponents.

“We took one set from Williamsburg, but our passing hurt us in that match,” he said.

The Panthers lost the first set 25-18, won the second 25-17 and lost the third 15-7.

Pekin ended the day on a high note, taking two sets from IMS.

“IMS challenged us in multiple rallies down the stretch to keeping attacking,” said Hutchinson. “We have struggled in long rallies this year, making unforced hitting errors. Against IMS, we did a great job staying focused and continuing to put pressure on them. We committed 12 hitting errors, but none in the last five points of each set.”

Maci Gambell and Haley Gambell put up great numbers individually, both finishing with 17 kills. Maci had 27 digs and was 27-30 serving with five aces. Haley added 17 assists.

Ellie Ledger had 11 kills and four blocks. Kennedy Coleman had 17 assists, went 29-32 on serves and had five aces.

Paige Winn had three kills. Faith Oostra had six, and Ali Bainbridge had eight. Whitney Johnson contributed 36 digs.
