The last scrimmage of the preseason went well for the Pekin Panthers Monday night at their jamboree, where they beat Davis County 26-15 in two eight-minute quarters, essentially one regular half of play, although you might not hear the team talk about it.

When asked what, if anything, disappointed him about the victory, Coach Hutchinson started answering before I could finish the question.

“Communication ... it was terrible. We were way too quiet.” said the Panthers’ leader. “We lost our senior leader that did all the communicating last year. Two different times we gave up layups because we weren’t even talking about who we were guarding. We had a layup to start the second quarter for no reason. So by far, I would use the word disappointed when discussing our communication, because that has to get a lot better.”

Coach Hutchinson was actually pretty happy with the teams’ effort.

“I thought that we played pretty hard, and most importantly, offensively, I thought we were very unselfish. I’ve talked about how we’ve got a lot of options, it’s just making sure we’re not selfish, and we’re not turning the ball over. We didn’t turn the ball over much tonight, and we were pretty unselfish, which was nice to see.”

The Panthers can now relax and stuff their bellies with turkey and such over the holiday weekend before hitting the road for the first week of the season starting Monday with a trip to Cardinal, followed by a visit to Mediapolis on Dec. 1, before hosting Lone Tree in the home-opener Dec. 5.
