Pekin hosts New London, playing for second place

By Justin Webster | Oct 12, 2017

The Class A-District 6 champion for 2017 is Lynnville-Sully after the Hawks went 7-0, with victories over both Pekin and New London.

The second playoff slot in the district will be decided outside Packwood Friday night, when 7-1 Pekin hosts 5-1 New London. Obviously, Panther Head Coach Brent Blakely would rather win and be guaranteed a spot, as opposed to sitting for a week and hoping for an at-large bid due to points.

“I’m sure someone a whole lot smarter than me has crunched all the numbers and has it figured out and all the scenarios,” said Blakely. “We are approaching this Friday like a playoff game. If we lose and are fortunate enough to get in, that is great too. Preferably I’d like to have a good idea where we stand going in to next week, but we will take things as they come.”

The game is also being billed as the “Hereos Game” with all current and former law enforcement, volunteer fire departments, military, and first responders receiving free admission. On top of that, it’s Senior Night and Coach Blakely says he has fond memories of the Panther class of 2018.

“Our seniors have been a joy to work with all year, and any extra time you get with teams and a staff like I have is just a cherry on top,” said Blakely. “Seeing everyone buy into what we want to do, and then getting it done has been fun for me. It’s like reading a book you don’t want to end.”

Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Packwood.
