Pekin hosts Van Buren, Cardinal and Fairfield in jamboree

By Justin Webster | Nov 14, 2017

Pekin will host an eight-team jamboree tonight that will include all four schools in The Ledger’s coverage area.

The first game of the evening will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. between Coach Matt Zeitler and his Van Buren Warriors and the Twin Cedars Sabers.

Coach Davis Eidahl and his Lady Panthers will host Jacob Blumer and the Cardinal Comets, and Sigourney will also play Moravia in the other middle game. The final matchup will pit Davis County versus Coach Brian Witzenburg and the Fairfield Trojans.

Teams will play one “half” consisting of two normal length eight minute quarters.

Each team in the state gets three legal scrimmage days a season, with each team able to play up to three schools on each of those days, but by calling this a “Jamboree” none of the schools participating will have tonight’s contests counted against their totals.

Van Buren skipper Matt Zeitler says, “This is a good opportunity for us to play someone other than our junior varsity.” He added, “Smaller schools like us especially need these reps, because we only have 17 girls out and you can only show them so much in practice, so we get a lot out of these games.”

Zeitler says that his team participated in the same event at Cedar Rapids Kennedy as Fairfield did this past weekend, and those games also did not count towards their totals. Van Buren will use their scrimmage days to play over the Thanksgiving break next week and Christmas break. Coach Zeitler said that he usually keeps one day for the end of the season because “most decent teams in 2A get a bye,” and he doesn’t want his team sitting around for 13 days without playing any competition, which is unfortunately how long many teams are forced to wait. For that reason, he and Coach Davis at Keokuk will save their final scrimmage for that break in February before they start the playoffs, so they can play each other and avoid a two-week lull.
