The Pekin Panthers captured the championship at the Warrior Relays in Van Buren County on Monday.

“On a cold, windy, rainy night, our team competed hard and mentally prepared for the meet,” said Pekin head coach Davis Eidahl. “Coming off a long weekend, it did us a lot of good to run in a meet.”

The Panthers took the crown with 232 team points, runner-up Central Lee was far back, with 116.

In the six-team meet, Pekin’s JV team took fourth.

“That really pleased me,” Eidahl said. “When your JV team does well against varsity teams, that shows we’re a very well-rounded squad.”

Among the highlights for Pekin, Trever Northup took gold in the shot put (44-1) and Slater Williams won the discus (103-1). Zach Conger won the high jump (5-10) and 400 (55.13). Ryan Millikin took gold in the 3,200 (10:35.63) and 1,600 (4:53.77). Dayne Eckley won the 100 (12.03) and 200 (24.12). Levi Long took first in the 400 hurdles (59.06), and Jordan Hixon won the 110 hurdles (18.30).

Cameron Millikin, Ryan Millikin, Chandler Eckley and Sam Roth won the 4x800 (8:40.82). Conger, Roth, Isaiah Wittrock and Chandler Eckley won the 4x400 (3:49.58).

Last week, Pekin competed at the Drake Relays.

“I normally don’t put too much emphasis on the Drake Relays,” Eidahl said. “But it is an honor to go up there.

“Our 4x8 team (Ryan Millikin, Roth, Malcolm Myers and Chandler Eckley) finished 10th, which is quite an accomplishment considering they only invite 16 teams.

“And our 4x1 team (Tyler Copeland, Long, Chase Eckley and Monico Requena) did very well. They take 80 teams, we were ranked No. 78, and finished 34th. That was very impressive to me.”
