Pekin Panthers win at Cardinal Comets basketball

By Justin Webster | Nov 29, 2017

Two of our area teams played in an SEISC matchup Tuesday night, with host Cardinal falling to Pekin 75-21 in front of a healthy crowd.

First-year Cardinal coach Jacob Blume admits that his team seemed to be a little intimated at first, falling behind by 8-10 points early.

He added, “For us, we never really had all five players working together. We also had way too many unforced errors. Their guards were jumping passes out of the 2-3 zone, plus their bigs played up well, and we couldn’t get the ball inside the free throw line without turning it over or rushing a shot.”

Alexia McClure had eight points, five rebounds and three steals for the Comets. Jamie White had nine points and two rebounds, while Maddie Cloke and Alondra Herrera had two points each.

For Pekin, Coach Davis Eidahl was pleased with the Panther effort.

“We played pretty well. Our passes were good, we blocked out and had good fundamentals,” he said, “Also, tonight we worked on the girls taking shots when they are open, rather then rely on one or two girls to do the scoring. We passed well and played hard, and all 11 girls got to play which is big because we have two games up next where we probably won’t be substituting much.”

The Panthers were led by Maci Gambell and her 23 points. She also had nine rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Her cousin Haley added 14 points, eight rebounds and a steal. The junior Kelly Meyers notched 12 points and three rebounds. Whitney Johnson collected 10 points, three boards and a steal, and the sophomore Emilee Linder totaled eight points, a rebound, an assist and four steals.

Cardinal will now travel to Central Lee, Donnellson, Friday night, while the Panthers and coach Davis Eidahl head to Mediapolis.
