By Andy Hallman Ledger news editor | Aug 29, 2017

SIGOURNEY – Pekin has started the football season 2-0. Its most recent win was Friday over Sigourney on the road, which it defeated 37-13.

Much of the action in the game occurred in the first quarter. Torell Washington started the scoring by scampering in from 26 yards to give Pekin a 7-0 lead.

Caleb Comstock connected on a 69-yard pass to Chandler Eckley for the Panthers’ second score, 14-0. Sigourney could feel the game slipping away already, until Carson Crawford ran in a touchdown from 96 yards out to cut the deficit to 14-7.

Monico Requena, the star of Week 1, was in tip-top form once again. He scored a pair of touchdowns one after the other to end the first quarter. The first was from 27 yards out and the second was from 13 yards out. He also scored a two-point conversion on the second touchdown.

After just 12 minutes in the books, the Panthers had staked out to a 28-7 lead.

Neither team scored in the second quarter. Sigourney scored on a 6-yard run to cut the deficit to 28-13 in the third (after a failed extra point). Pekin got two of those points back on a safety later in the quarter to make the score 30-13.

Requena punched in another touchdown, this time from 32 yards out in the fourth quarter, to finish the scoring.

Pekin gained most of its yards on the ground, accounting for 329 of its 429 total yards. Sigourney was also a running team first, as the Savages ran for 238 yards and passed for 84.

Comstock finished the game 4-10 in passing, accounting for all 100 yards of Pekin’s aerial offense. Requena rushed for three touchdowns and a total of 175 yards on 19 carries. Washington ran 128 yards on seven attempts. Comstock ran for 8 yards and Keaton Baayen ran for 2.

Chandler Eckley caught three passes for 95 yards. Requena caught one pass for 5 yards.

Chandler Eckley led the team in tackles with seven. Connor Reed had six. Hunter Conger and Cameron Millikin each had three tackles. Kaden Baker and Drake Harbison each had two.

Kicker Levi Rohr made three point-after attempts.
